The million-strong army of King Xerxes began the invasion of Greece. The Spartan king Leonid and his people meet a delegation demanding "land and water", i.e. complete submission to the Persian king Xerxes. In response, the Spartans throw the inhabitants into the well. Despite predictions of defeat by the priests bribed by the Persians, Leonid leads a Spartan detachment and continues his campaign, blocking the path of the Persians at the Fiery Gate in the Thermopylae Valley.
There Leonid refuses the help of local residents — the hunchbacked Epialt, the son of a runaway Spartan who can only take care of the wounded, the enraged Epialt takes away his father's weapons. Before the start of the battle, the Persians ask the Spartans to lay down their spears and swords, which fly into the chest of the negotiator. The Spartans repel a lot of enemy attacks. They throw their best forces into battle. In the camp of Xerxes, a giant executioner with a blade in his hand cuts off the heads of failed military leaders. In negotiations with Xerxes, Leonid rejected the offer to become the leader of the whole of Greece, agreeing to "carry the banner of the battle of Xerxes to the heart of Europe." The Persians attack again, but all their efforts are in vain.
